Spring 2016 Programs:

Join us at the Springwater American Legion, 7998 School Street for a Dish to Pass Dinner at 6:30 and the Program at 7:15.  All programs are Free and Open to the Public.  Donations for the support of the Society are welcome.

Tuesday, March 8, 2016, the Springwater / Webster Crossing Historical Society meeting will feature Lagom Landing, located on 7966 Reed’s Corners Road in Sparta.

This program is open to the public and will feature students and mentors Laurel Nelson and Rock Castor from Lagom Landing:  a year long alternative educational opportunity for youth (www.lagomlanding.com).  Laurel and Rock will give a little history of their calling to provide a place where young people can build a foundation for their life.  The fourth class of students--Jadzia, Isaiah, and Tyler-- will share their stories on how they decided to take the challenge of a year at Lagom Landing.

Come prepared to ask questions and share your story on what you chose for your life’s work and why you chose it.  Life is about making wise decisions, and your experience, when shared, will enrich the program, either at this program or at one of their monthly “Speaking with Bread” opportunities.

Lagom Landing is a nonprofit residential program providing 18-25 year olds a unique opportunity to build a foundation for the rest of their lives.  Students are encouraged to discover their passions and gifts while learning skills that will benefit them no matter what direction they go.  Carpentry, gardening, cooking, maple sugaring, and other hands-on trades are the “tools” the students use to free up their minds and gain focus for their next step in life.  Students spend time in nature while also living and working closely with mentors who inspire and motivate them to “land” into discovering who they are, not just what they will do.

Saturday, April 16 at 7pm (Note different day and time) Dr. Valgene Dunham, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of the Coastal Carolina University will speak on his new Civil War book "Gregory's New York Brigade: blue collar reserves in dusty blue jackets."  The book covers General Gregory's brigade made up of New York regiments 187, 188, and 189.  Regiment 188th had numerous individuals from Springwater and other towns in the area, including Dr Dunham’s great-great grandfather.    Dr.  Dunham will offer for sale and sign his books "Allegany to Appomattox", hard copy $30 and "Gregory's New York Brigade: blue collar reserves in dusty blue jackets", hard copy $35, soft copy $19.  The Program is free and Open to the Public at the Springwater American Legion on School Street.

Tuesday May 10,  Amie Alden, Livingston County Historian will help us celebrate and understand Springwater’s Bicentennial with a presentation on the general history, settlement and development of Springwater and Livingston County.  6:30 Dish to Pass Dinner with Program at 7:15.  The Program is free and Open to the Public at the Springwater American Legion on School Street.
